The Short Answer
As of August 2026, the three big AI ad stories are three completely different products, and only one of them is a real buying decision. ChatGPT sells ads inside the conversation, opened a self-serve platform in May with no minimum spend, and reports your results in its own dashboard. Google runs ads inside AI Mode and AI Overviews, bought through the Search and Performance Max campaigns you already run, except Google does not break out that performance, so you cannot tell how it did. Meta sells nothing inside Meta AI at all. Instead, since December 2025, conversations with Meta AI feed the targeting behind ads in your regular Facebook and Instagram feed. So: one channel you can buy and measure, one you are probably already buying blind, and one you cannot buy but are already benefiting from.
These three get talked about as if they were one decision. They are not the same product, they are not on the same timeline, and only one of them will tell you what your money did.
How ChatGPT Ads Work
OpenAI started testing ads in January 2026 on the Free and ChatGPT Go tiers, then launched properly on February 9 with Target, Adobe, Williams-Sonoma, and Albertsons (OpenAI, 2026). Paid tiers stay clean. Plus, Team, and Enterprise subscribers see nothing.
The real unlock came May 6. OpenAI opened a self-serve Ads Manager and dropped the $50,000 minimum that had kept the platform to big brands. Targeting runs on conversation: what someone is asking about right now, what they asked before, which ads they engaged with. If you are used to buying keywords, this is a different muscle.
What Are ChatGPT Ads Actually Returning?
Six weeks in, OpenAI had 600 advertisers and a $100 million annualized run rate (OpenAI, via The Keyword, 2026). Be precise about that second number: it is a run rate measured at the six-week mark, not $100 million banked in six weeks.
The more useful number is 600. Six hundred advertisers, in a market where millions of businesses buy paid media every day. That is the entire opportunity in one figure. The auction is not crowded yet.
Hard performance data is thin, because the channel is months old, but what exists is worth reading. One advertiser pushed $60,000 through scaled ChatGPT campaigns over 15 days and came back with a 1.49x blended ROAS, a $1.72 CPC, and a 2.35% conversion rate (Opascope, 2026). The same team refused to publish a CTR, and their reason matters more than the number would have: daily ROAS swung from 0.2x to 2.9x. This is a data point, not a benchmark. Separately, one agency puts its own clients’ ChatGPT conversion rates anywhere from 0.2% to 5.8% (First Page Sage, 2026), which is their book of business, not the market.
How Google’s AI Ads Work
Here is where media plans go wrong. People say “Gemini ads” and mean two different things, and one of them does not exist.
Ads in AI Mode and AI Overviews are live. These are Google Search surfaces, which is why calling them “Gemini ads” confuses people. You buy them through the infrastructure you already use: Performance Max, AI Max for Search, broad-match Search campaigns, placed by Google’s matching and labeled “Sponsored.” At Google Marketing Live 2026, Google added formats built for that surface. Conversational Discovery Ads generate creative in real time off the specific phrasing of someone’s query. Direct Offers, the promotions pilot, is picking up deal bundling and native checkout for merchants (Google, via The Keyword, 2026).
Ads inside the Gemini chatbot app do not exist. Google has told advertisers ads are coming to Gemini in 2026, separate from AI Mode. No formats, no pricing, no prototypes (Adweek, 2026). If “Gemini ads” is sitting in your 2026 plan as a line item, go find out which one you meant. One is buyable this afternoon. The other is a press release.
The part nobody warns you about
There are no CPC, ROAS, or conversion numbers for Google’s AI ad surfaces, and it is not because researchers have been slow. Google does not let anyone see them. In its own documentation: “Google Ads currently doesn’t offer segmented reporting when ads show within Search AI Overviews,” and ads served there are “reported as Top Ads” inside your existing campaign totals (Google Ads Help, 2026). No AI Mode column. No placement report. No way to split that spend out.
Sit with what that means. You can run ads in AI Mode today. You cannot tell how they did. The spend, the clicks, and the conversions fold into your Search and Performance Max totals, and no outside analyst can publish a benchmark because the platform does not expose one to anybody.
Meta AI: The One You Cannot Buy
Meta is the quiet one, and most people have the mechanism wrong. There are no ads inside Meta AI answers. There is no Meta AI placement to buy, no minimum, no dashboard, because it is not an ad product at all.
What Meta built instead is bigger. Since December 16, 2025, your conversations with Meta AI feed the targeting engine behind the ads you already see on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. In Meta’s own words, “interactions with AIs will be another signal we use to improve people’s experience” (Meta, 2025). More than a billion people use Meta AI every month. Meta excludes sensitive categories, religion, health, sexual orientation, political views, race, and union membership, and there is no clean way for a user to opt out.
So Meta’s AI ad product is the one you cannot buy, cannot see, and are already using. If you run Meta ads, a billion people’s AI conversations are quietly sharpening your targeting right now, and there is no line item anywhere that says so. That is why it gets called the sleeper. Not because a new placement is coming, but because the targeting layer underneath the placements you already buy got a massive new data source and nobody had to approve a budget for it.

Which Should You Test First?
Already running Google Ads? You are almost certainly in AI Mode already. Performance Max, AI Max for Search, and broad-match Search all reach that inventory by default, which means the decision got made for you. What you cannot do is grade it. So if someone tells you their AI Mode ads are crushing it, ask which report they read that in. There is not one.
Already running Meta ads? Same situation, one layer down. You are not buying a Meta AI placement, but Meta AI is already shaping who sees your ads. There is no test to run and no toggle to flip. The practical move is to keep watching your Meta targeting quality and remember that the inputs changed under you in December.
ChatGPT is the only real decision on this list, and it is the real bet. New surface, no spend minimum, 600 advertisers deep. Be honest about those early numbers: a 1.49x ROAS is not a headline. That is not the point. The point is that it was earned while the auction is still thin, and thin auctions do not stay thin. This is the AI ad land-grab we have written about before. The brands learning this platform’s creative and targeting requirements right now are buying that education at a discount, and everyone who waits pays retail.
As for ads inside the Gemini app, there is nothing to buy and no format to build for. Watch it. Do not budget for it.
What Would Change This
All of the above is accurate as of August 2026, and this is a market that moves in months, not years. Four things would rewrite this piece. Google opening segmented reporting for its AI surfaces, which would finally let advertisers grade that spend and let researchers publish real benchmarks. Google actually shipping ads inside the Gemini app with formats and pricing attached. Meta turning Meta AI into a real placement you can buy rather than a signal you cannot see. And enough advertisers piling into ChatGPT that its auction stops being cheap. Watch those four. Until they happen, the guidance here holds.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I advertise inside ChatGPT right now?
Yes. ChatGPT ads have been live since February 9, 2026, and the self-serve Ads Manager that launched May 6, 2026 removed the previous $50,000 minimum spend. You can set up a campaign directly, with no large upfront commitment.
Can I buy ads inside Meta AI?
No. There is no Meta AI ad placement to buy. Meta does not sell ads inside Meta AI conversations. What Meta does instead is use your conversations with Meta AI as a targeting signal for ads shown in the normal Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger feeds. That change took effect December 16, 2025.
Are Gemini ads the same as AI Mode ads?
No, and this is the most common mix-up. Ads inside AI Mode and AI Overviews, which are Google Search surfaces, are live and buyable through standard Google Ads campaign types. Ads inside the Gemini chatbot app are a separate product that has not launched. Google has only confirmed it is coming sometime in 2026.
Can I track how my ads perform inside Google AI Mode?
No. Google states in its own documentation that it “currently doesn’t offer segmented reporting when ads show within Search AI Overviews,” and that ads appearing there are “reported as Top Ads” within your existing campaign metrics. There is no AI Mode column, no placement-level report, and no way to separate that spend from the rest of your Search or Performance Max campaigns. This is also why no independent CPC or ROAS benchmark exists for Google’s AI ad surfaces. The platform does not expose that data to anyone.
Am I already running ads in AI Mode without realizing it?
Probably. Performance Max, AI Max for Search, and broad-match Search campaigns all reach AI Mode inventory automatically, so if you run any of those, some of your budget is already being spent there. Because Google does not break that spend out in reporting, you cannot see how much or how well it performed.
Is Meta AI affecting my Meta ads even though I cannot buy it?
Yes. Since December 16, 2025, Meta uses interactions with Meta AI as a signal for ad and content personalization across its apps, and more than a billion people use Meta AI every month. If you run Facebook or Instagram ads, that signal is already influencing who sees them. Meta excludes sensitive categories including religion, health, sexual orientation, political views, race, and union membership.
What ROAS or CPC can I actually expect from ChatGPT ads?
The most detailed public case study is one advertiser’s $60,000 campaign tracked over 15 days: a 1.49x blended ROAS, a $1.72 CPC, and a 2.35% conversion rate. Daily results swung from roughly 0.2x to 2.9x ROAS, so treat that as a data point rather than a promise. Broad independent benchmarks do not exist yet because the channel is only months old.
Which AI ad channel should I test first?
ChatGPT, because it is the only one of the three that is both buyable and measurable. Google’s AI surfaces are already absorbing part of your Search and Performance Max budget whether you chose that or not, and you cannot isolate the results. Meta AI is not a placement at all. That leaves ChatGPT as the only genuine media-buying decision available right now.
What are Conversational Discovery Ads and Direct Offers?
Both are Google ad formats built for AI Mode, announced at Google Marketing Live 2026. Conversational Discovery Ads generate creative in real time based on the exact wording of someone’s query. Direct Offers is a promotions pilot picking up deal bundling and native checkout for merchants, including a travel expansion with Booking and Expedia.
